Dean Jones, what a life!

Dean Jones was born on January 25th 1931 in Alabama. He is most widely known for his role in many Disney movies including the Volkswagen Beetle called Herbie.

But please don't say, "Oh that guy" just yet. His Christian testimony is worth a much closer look.

Dean became a Christian in 1973. This was near the time of his father’s death, he also endured a divorce from his first wife Mae Entwisle, and remarried in 1973 to actress Lory Patrick Jones. He has appeared in several Christian films. These are among his greatest works in my opinion. My favorite is his stage performance where he toured as a one man show known as St. John in Exile. In this production, Jones portrayed St. John, the last surviving Apostle of Jesus Christ, reminiscing about his life while imprisoned on the Greek island of Patmos. A performance was filmed in 1996. In 1998 Jones founded the Christian Rescue Committee (CRC), an organization that helps provide a "way of escape to Jews, Christians, and others persecuted for their faith." He is semi-retired and currently lives in California.

I would not have known about his greatest work, St. John in exile had I not stumbled across it in the Family Christian books store. I bought a copy for $6.98, and was blown away at what he does with the character. This is a great demonstration of the talent of Dean Jones as he portrays the follower of Jesus, known also as John the Beloved disciple.

The jacket on the DVD puts it this way:
Imprisoned, John the last living disciple of Jesus' twelve, remains full of humor, strong in spirit and obstinately spry.

Dean Jones demonstrates an intriguing perspective on a follower of Christ who is credited as the writer of five of the New Testament books. This performance is entertaining, intriguing and true to the biblical accounts surrounding the life of John.

If you can find it, you will have a great treasure for the family library. If you are into acting you can really learn from watching this master! This is a life changing presentation and what I would consider Dean Jones' best theatrical work! I hope you find it buy it, watch it and be amazed! I know I was.

Now I am looking for my copy of Acts , where he performs as Dr. Luke telling the book of Acts. I didn’t know that was him! I am glad I learned about this Alabama born, Christian reborn man who uses his gift to draw us into the life of Christ.

Knowing Your Purpose

We should always be proud of who God has made us to be and never allow the voice of discouragement to make us wish we were someone else. God has created each of us as an original and unique being equipped with special gifts and talents that no one else possesses. You are on this earth for a reason and only you have the tools that are required to accomplish every dream and aspiration that God has placed within your heart. You must see yourself as God sees you; as special and one-of-a-kind. Never doubt your existence or your abilities. Trust that God will reveal to you your life's purpose and when He does be quick to follow and obey where He leads because it is sure to be a place prepared to bless you more than you are able to think or even imagine. ARE YOU JESUS?

A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night dinner. Running through the airport with their briefcases in hand, one of these salesmen inadvertently knocked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to barely reach the plane just in time for the final boarding call.

All but one.

He paused, took a deep breath, got in touch with his feelings, and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on without him, waved good-bye, told one of them to call his wife when they arrived home and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor.

He was glad he did.

The 16-year-old girl was totally blind. She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her--no one stopping and no one to care for her plight. The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table and helped organize her display. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket. When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said, "Here, please take this $40 for the damage we did. Are you okay?"

She nodded through her tears. He continued on, "I hope we didn't spoil your day too badly."
As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him, "Mister..."
He paused and turned to look back into those blind eyes. She continued, "Are you Jesus?"
He stopped in mid-stride. Then slowly he made his way to catch the later flight with that question burning and bouncing about in his soul: "Are you Jesus?"

Do people mistake you for Jesus? That's our destiny, is it not? To be so much like Jesus that people cannot tell the difference as we live and interact with a world that is blind to His love, life and grace. If we claim to know Him, we should live, walk and act as He would. Knowing Him is more than simply quoting Scripture and going to church. It's actually living the Word as life unfolds day to day.

You are the apple of His eye even though we, too, have been bruised by a fall. He stopped what He was doing and picked up you and me on a hill called Calvary and paid in full for our damaged fruit.

What do I find that is so appealing about Jesus?

It's not just a fascination with events recorded in a book from long ago. Jesus is alive today and is interested in me and every detail of my life! He's there when nobody else can be. He knows me completely like no one can and yet He still loves me! He helps me with even the most trivial of things. "What socks will I wear today, Jesus?" He knows me on the inside better than any piece of technology than any science could ever develop. He heals me and sets me free from the pain of my sin. He has given Himself totally for me and I long to do the same for Him. He restores me to fellowship with my Creator. He reminds me how to live victoriously! He forgives me and guides me back when I lose my focus from Him. He reveals to me the nature and character of God, my loving Heavenly Father who will judge sin. Because Jesus rescued me, I now know love and His strength in the midst of my weakness. He completes me and makes me whole -- emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. He is my source for joy even when I am in the temporary throws of life's turmoil. Knowing Jesus brings stability and meaning to my life. I am glad that Jesus is my friend and my Hero. When I hurt, He heals, if I stumble he picks me up, brushes me off and puts me back into His service. If Jesus ever left me, I wouldn't move again until He found me. I don't want to breath the air where Jesus is not. Jesus makes life so worth living and amazingly simple, I am ready to follow Him right out of this world when He chooses. As long as I am here I will follow Him and honor Him with the life He gives me. God teaches me that life is very simple --I want to love God with all my heart, and people as myself. I hope you know Him too. I hope we can learn more about Him from each other.

Today, I am reminded:

For those in need of a mother, He tenderly cares for us. (Luke 1:76-79; 1 Thessalonians 2:7)

For those in need of a father, He confidently and gently leads us. (Psalm 23:1-2, 3-4, 5-6)

For those in need of relationships, He loves us. (1 John 4:10)

For those in need of compassion, He weeps for us. (Philippians 2:1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-11)

For those in need of a Savior, He died for us all. (Luke 1:46-48, 49-50; Titus 3:4-5, 6-7)

Jesus is definitely worth knowing! If you would like to know Him, I would be glad to introduce you to Him. If I you see me and I seem to be wandering away from Him for even a moment please point me back in His direction. Without Jesus I would be lost and destined for hell.

The appeal of most contests is that this just might be fun. I have recently started using Facebook and found that many of my friends are using it too. The appeal of Facebook is that "your wall" changes from day to day as the people you connect to as friends post new things. I shared several pictures for the Logo's contest and actually got feedback. I thought that was pretty neat. Well, the hole in yard is still there, so I guess it's time to get it fixed!

Let your hand remind you who to pray for...

A simple and fun way to remember who to pray for.

1. Your thumb is nearest you.

So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty."

2. The next finger is the pointing finger.

Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers!

3. The next finger is the tallest finger.

It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger.

Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble, or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And lastly comes our little finger -

The smallest finger of all which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you," Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective; and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

90 Day Challenge

I thought it was neat that there was a printed reading plan that would allow the reader to go through the NIV by reading twelve pages a day for 88-90 days. The book was laid out with a header that informs the reader when they have completed the 12 pages. When I purchased the book, the sales clerk made mention that the book felt heavy, considering the size.
I found that it takes about forty five minutes to read the daily quota.
I like the NIV translation and had been wanting a newer print copy. (The last NIV I had was a Thompson chain reference that was full of notes and rather heavy with very thin pages.)
Now I will admit that I had to have some help in keeping up with the rapid 90 day program. So I have incorporated the listening to the Bible Experience Old and New Testaments with the same 90 day schedule. This has helped me to stay on pace and listen to the Bible as I am traveling. The Bible Experience is an interesting dramatization of the Bible with some very talented voices. The text used is the Today's New International Version (TNIV). It is a very exciting audio Bible. Some of the sound effects catch you off guard and every once in a while seem a little distracting. But it is very enjoyable over all. My goal now is to listen to the Bible in it's entirety at least once per quarter in 2009. I am using my Logos Bible reading planner to schedule out the daily hearings/readings much like the 90 day NIV book does in the 12 pages per day plan. I am already contemplating my next audio version. I am reminded that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Romans 10:17

Jesus Came To Seek and Save that Which Is Lost

I am reading a book on evangelism called Search and Rescue by Neil Cole. (Luke 19:10) In the book, the author tells of his experiences as lifeguard and being a witness for Christ. I love how he recounts his visit to Rome where he visited a prison cell in the Mamertine Prison. (This may have been the last prison cell that the apostle Paul was in prior to his death by beheading for being a Christian. It may also be where Paul wrote his last letter to Timothy.
To prepare for the trip, the author reread the Second Epistle of Timothy numerous times with his daughter (2 Timothy 3:14-15) to get into the mindset of Paul. Later he writes that his visit to the Vatican paled in comparison to the visit of that dark and dingy prison cell. The author's connection to Paul was obviously greatly impacted because of his Bible studies. (2 Timothy 2:9)
Reading the scriptures daily (and diving deep into God's Word will help you in preparing for being a powerful witness for Christ. The world has a dangerous undertow! This author is a hero who reminds us how to stay a float! Jesus is our Life Saver. (Luke 17:33)

Becoming a more Effective minister in 2009

For me the primary function of a blog is to communicate with others of what is going on in your life. In 2008, I dabbled in social networking using the internet. Typically, the few folks who visit a blog or site by accident may rarely decide that they would like to get to know you, but most often prefer to pass by on the other side, kind of like "I don't want to get involved or be accountable, especially if you appear to be beaten or exposed." I am thinking of the story of the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10:30)
The few blogs that I have taken the time to read are when people seem to open up and reveal their victorious experiences and or more often it seems their struggles in their Christian walk.
However, I too find myself refraining from posting comments but choosing to safely pass by on the other side and simply whisper a prayer to God on their behalf perhaps sometimes thinking, look how "spiritual" I am. Honestly, it's such a safe approach, no long term commitment, get in get out no one gets hurt. (Luke 10:31-32)

I recognize which one I am most like in the story. Can you guess? Is it the robber, the victim, the priest or the Levite? I can tell you that it has not been the hero of the story as much as I would like it to be. I am convinced that there is more to do.
In the story, Jesus wants us to be like the Good Samaritan. The mission is to get actively involved in the lives of our neighbors in positive ways! (Luke 10:33) In 2009 it's time for me to roll up my sleeves and get into the trenches and be more like Jesus by getting into action to help the hurting and rescue the perishing who are all around me. (Matthew 18:14)
Today, the Good Samaritan still carries a prepared first-aid kit. (Luke 10:34; Luke 10:35) God has graciously given me a willing spirit with a dedicated heart to actively apply the Word of God to every situation being constantly reminded that the souls of people (my neighbors) are at stake. The next few posts will be ways that I am working to have a ready to use first-aid kit. Yes, praying is a good start (1 Thessalonians 5:17) but putting faith into action is when lives are miraculously changed and a whole lot more exciting! (James 1:22-23) Be careful if you choose to join me. Sometimes it can get a little messy in the neighborhood. (1 Thessalonians 5:21) Walking out the door whistling a familiar song: It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, ...won't you be my neighbor?
